Who we are

Advisor.ca has been informing and educating Canadian financial advisors since 1998, when Advisor’s Edge magazine first launched. Our website, Advisor.ca, debuted two years later and has become an industry-leading source of news and analysis for credentialed, client-facing financial professionals. Today, Advisor.ca reaches more than 110,000 readers every month.

Editorial Team


With more than 15 years of financial reporting and newsroom management experience, Melissa Shin heads Newcom Media Inc.’s suite of industry-leading English and French investment publications. Her work has been cited in university syllabi, in textbooks and to national regulators. She has won awards from CFA Society Toronto, the Portfolio Management Association of Canada and Women in Communications and Technology, as well as a fellowship from the Institutes for Journalism and Natural Resources. Before joining the Advisor.ca team in 2011, Melissa was managing editor of Corporate Knights, an independent magazine focused on clean capitalism. While there, she launched multiple sustainability rankings and was asked to advise national organizations on ESG strategy. A graduate of the Schulich School of Business at York University, Melissa is the vice-chair of the board of Fashion Takes Action, a non-profit focused on advancing sustainability in the fashion industry.

Previously a freelance editor and writer, Michelle Schriver brings her passion for editing and writing about complex topics to the team. While completing Ryerson’s Certificate in Publishing, she won two awards for academic excellence and innovation. Michelle is an active member of Editors Canada, for which she’s served as sponsorship chair and branch seminars chair. Despite having success as a do-it-yourself investor — in her university days, she admits she invested her tuition money in stocks between semesters — she’s now gained the wisdom to listen to the experts.

Katie Keir, who was named Best New Journalist by the Canadian Business Media Awards in 2012, has been reporting on financial services and business trends for more than 10 years. Her reporting specialties have included regulatory reform, compliance and the evolution of ESG practices. From 2016 to 2020, she volunteered as the editorial director of the Toronto Vegetarian Association’s quarterly magazine, which in part covered ethical and environmental issues. Katie holds an Honours Bachelor’s degree in English and Drama from the University of Toronto.

Allan Janssen is an award-winning journalist and the host of Soundbites, a podcast for investment advisors. He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism at Toronto Metropolitan University and has worked at several Canadian newspapers, including The Listowel BannerThe Cobourg Daily StarThe Hamilton Journal, and The Peterborough Examiner. After a brief stint monitoring media in England and teaching journalism in Zimbabwe, he spent several years in South Africa editing consumer and trade magazines, most notably Food & Home magazine. Allan joined Newcom Media Inc., the parent company of Advisor.ca, in 1995 as editor of Automotive Parts & Technology magazine. At Newcom, he founded Canadian Technician magazine, CARS magazine and was the host of the In the Shop and Auto Service World Conversations podcasts. He joined Advisor.ca in 2020.

Noushin Ziafati is an associate editor for Advisor.ca and its sister publication, Investment Executive. She holds a bachelor of journalism from Toronto Metropolitan University and has worked at several news outlets including the CBC, Canadian Press, CTV News, Telegraph-Journal and Chronicle Herald. In 2021, she received a gold Atlantic Journalism Award in the newspaper feature category for a story she wrote about an asylum seeker working at a long-term care institution in Nova Scotia that was rocked by Covid-19.

Rudy Mezzetta is a senior reporter for Advisor.ca and its sister publication, Investment Executive. He has been reporting on tax, trust and estate planning, industry news and more since 2005. Rudy writes the Executor’s Life column, a recurring feature on estate administration issues, for Advisor.ca and the Tax Travels column, a regular feature on provincial tax and estate issues, for IE. He helps lead both publications’ coverage of the annual federal budget.

Jonathan Got is an Ottawa-based reporter for Advisor.ca. He graduated from Carleton University’s Master of Journalism program where he received awards in television and agriculture journalism. He previously worked as a reporter on the innovation economy for The Logic and his byline has appeared in more than 20 Canadian newspapers. He enjoys learning about personal finance, admiring architecture and skating on Ottawa’s Rideau Canal. Jonathan joined the team in 2023.

Kathy is National Account Manager for Newcom Media’s Financial brands. A forward thinking media professional, she has worked with some of North America’s top financial brands, recommending and guiding marketing efforts to build and execute multimedia campaigns that not only reach corporate goals, but outperform benchmarks. Prior to joining the team in 2017, she worked with the Thomson Reuters Media Group, where in 2013 she won the Vice President’s Award for event sales and in 2014 won Media Sales Rep of the Year.

Anne-Marie is the account manager for Quebec for Advisor.ca and its sister publications. She joins the group from the media agency world, where she held a strategist position that involved research, development of creative multichannel media strategies and project coordination.

During her time at media agencies Touché! and Cossette, Anne-Marie managed accounts for clients such as the Government of Canada, Hydro-Quebec, the Office québécois de la langue française, Belron and Volkswagen. Anne-Marie holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing from the School of Management at the Université du Québec à Montréal.
