Learning module: A closer look at Tax-Free Savings Accounts
Roberta Wilton / November 06, 2009

The RRSP's lock on tax-advantaged savings ended at the beginning of this year with the introduction of the Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA).

Learning module: Getting to know KYP
Roberta Wilton / August 13, 2009

The know-your-client (KYC) rule is the basis for many of the regulations that govern our industry. But, while most advisors understand the requirement to know their clients, can the same be said about their knowledge of the products they recommend or sell?

Learning module: Psychology and the aging client
Roberta Wilton / April 13, 2009

Seniors are the largest and fastest growing group in Canada: One in eight Canadians was over 65 in 2001 and one in five will have reached age 65 by 2026. Financial planning businesses are already experiencing a growth in demand for wealth management services, as clients move beyond the wealth accumulation stage of their lives.

Learning module: Working with the entrepreneur
Roberta Wilton / March 12, 2009

Entrepreneurs dominate the high-net-worth category. If advisors are not educated to understand, empathize with and serve entrepreneurs, their potential within the high-net-worth client segment narrows dramatically. Working with entrepreneurs can also be an opportunity to gain insight and learn about different businesses as well. Doing this, though, requires specialized skills and tools.

Welcome to the flip side
Kate McCaffery / March 10, 2009

Until recently, risk in the context of financial planning has only been a concept or an idea — some clients, even some advisors have never felt the full consequences of real downside action. The new reality setting in, though, as uncomfortable as it might be, is giving advisors a tremendous opportunity to reassure and educate clients who are actually in a position now to learn from experience.

Learning module: Help for snowbirds
Roberta Wilton / February 05, 2009

Whether they know it or not, Canadian snowbirds have many challenging financial planning issues to deal with as a result of their annual pilgrimage south. While in the U.S., transactions as simple as opening a bank account or as complex as purchasing property can have legal and tax implications in both countries. This article is part of a mini-series of continuing education articles from the Canadian Securities Institute.

Our free CE courses are back
ADVISOR Staff / January 20, 2009

The Advisor.ca continuing education corner is back in business. Thanks for your patience while we worked through the process of getting our material re-accredited. If you're interested in getting a jump-start on your CE requirements for the current cycle, log-in, review the lessons, take our exam and print off your certificates — it's that easy.

Tax school intensive (A survivor's report)
Kate McCaffery / January 13, 2009

It may sound morbid, but from a tax planning point of view, early 2008 was a particularly unfortunate time to die for those with equity portfolio holdings. There are ways, though, to wait out the taxman and defer payment on that deemed disposition (and the need to sell those equities at a loss to make payment) until a later date when the market and portfolio values recover.

Last chance — read this article, earn free CE credits
Kate McCaffery / December 03, 2008

If you're still a few credits short of meeting your continuing education requirements this cycle, a relatively simple place to turn is Advisor.ca's new continuing education section and the Advisor's Edge CE Corner.
