Is real estate still a good investment?

Associate Managing Editor Suzanne Sharma would answer yes. She can cite a few reasons why Canada’s housing boom still has some life in it and provide some tips for buying U.S. properties.

Indeed, while it’s important for investors to look beyond Canada’s white-hot housing market, no serious portfolio is complete without a stake in retail and other commercial properties.

Despite the problems mortgage-backed securities played in the 2008 market crash and financial crisis, there are smart ways to invest in the loans underlying the current property boom.

And, there are even ways to garner returns from properties (like the family cottage) clients already own. Of course, that doesn’t mean clients should sell, per se, because Canada’s a great place to retire.
