Interviewing candidates for an associate or assistant position can be an onerous task.

But, there is one risky statement that can help you weed out the mediocre and help find superstar applicants, says Inc.

Say: “I’m sorry, but I just don’t think this is the right fit for you,”  and see how the candidate reacts.

Inc. says nine out of 10 candidates will crumble, but one will push back and be the tenacious candidate you’re looking for.

Of course, such a bold statement may backfire. Here are different ways you can frame it:

  • Why should I choose you over the other candidates?
  • What makes you different than other applicants?
  • Why do you think you’re qualified for this role?
