Amazon will pay an employee who wants to quit up to $5,000 to leave.
The strange deal is outlined in CEO Jeff Bezos’s annual letter to shareholders.
The program, called Pay to Quit, is an employee empowerment initiative. It was invented at Amazon owned online shoe store Zappos.
Once a year, Amazon offers their employees money to quit. The first year the offer is made, it’s worth $2,000. It goes up $1,000 a year until it reaches $5,000.
“The goal is to encourage folks to take a moment and think about what they really want. In the long-run, an employee staying somewhere they don’t want to be isn’t healthy for the employee or the company,” Bezos writes.
