Golf fans excited about next week’s British Open got some terrible news Monday morning: world number one Rory McIlroy announced on Twitter that he suffered a major ankle injury during “a soccer kickabout with friends on Saturday.”

The mishap, which left McIlroy in crutches, means it’s questionable whether he’ll be able to defend his Open title in a much-anticipated showdown with fellow young gun Jordan Speith, who’s captured the first two majors of the year.

The incident underscores how activities that for most people are completely innocuous can bring an athlete’s season or career to a grinding halt.
