Two weeks ago, Twitter made it more difficult to sync updates to your LinkedIn account.

Turns out, there’s a simple way to harmonize the two again.

A browser-based program called If This, Then That (or IFTTT) allows you connect two social media applications for automation purposes. So, if you want your LinkedIn status to auto-update every time you tweet, follow these steps:

1. Sign up for IFTTT.

2. Go to this “recipe” and click “use recipe.”

There are thousands of possible “recipes,” including automatically tweeting anything you read on Google Reader; texting you when the weather forecast calls for rain the next day; and automatically following back anyone who follows you on Twitter. You can find pre-made recipes here.

Two comments on the linking of Twitter and LinkedIn via IFTTT:

1. I’m not sure it’s always appropriate to be copying your Tweets to your LinkedIn status update, any more than it is appropriate to copy your Tweets to Facebook. If you are Tweeting actively and effectively, it will not be appropriate to LinkedIn. Hash tags used in Tweets are not native to LinkedIn and if you Tweet frequently (and you probably should) it will probably be too frequent for your LinkedIn connections.

2. IFTTT is a great and POWERFUL tool, but be careful about what you automate. If you’re a noobie, this could cause problems.

Maybe the decoupling of LinkedIn and Twitter was a blessing in disguise. ;-)
