Irish novelist’s manuscript auctions for £962,500

The University of Reading has acquired the original manuscript for Samuel Beckett’s first novel, Murphey, from an auction at Sotheby’s for £962,500.

A spokesperson for Reading, Pete Castle, told BBC News that the university would have to juggle certain assets in order to afford what he calls a “significant investment in a key area for the university’s special collection.”

Beckett won a Nobel Prize for literature in 1969 and recently a first edition of Murphey sold for £12,000 after it was donated to a local charity Oxfam shop, BBC News reports.
