University of British Columbia economics professor Paul Beaudry will join the Bank of Canada in February as deputy governor, the central bank said Tuesday.

Beaudry will fill the position of Sylvain Leduc, who departed in July to return to the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.

Beaudry will join the bank’s policy-making governing council and share responsibility for overseeing the BoC’s financial system activities with fellow deputy governor Lynn Patterson.

Born in Montreal, Beaudry received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Laval University and a master’s degree in economics from University of British Columbia before earning a PhD in economics from Princeton University. He’s a two-time former laureate of the Bank of Canada’s Research Fellowship Award and has also held a Canada Research Chair in economics.

He starts at the bank on Feb. 18.
