A B.C. resident pleaded guilty Friday to tax evasion under the Excise Tax Act after a CRA investigation found she had forged a Residential Tenancy Agreement (RTA).
Harpreet Kaur Sidhu of Burnaby, B.C., was sentenced to 12 months probation and fined $42,950—the amount of GST/HST she tried to evade, CRA said in a release.
Sidhu runs real estate company 6368 Lucky Construction Ltd. CRA found she had forged the RTA for a rental property in North Vancouver that Lucky owned and constructed, the agency said.
“By falsely stating the tenancy date on the RTA as prior to the July 1, 2010, HST implementation, Ms. Sidhu attempted to evade the payment of tax,” CRA said in a release. “The difference between the 5% GST and the 12% HST payable on the fair market value of the rental property (less a ‘transitional rebate’) is $42,950.”
