Larry Wood is the 2020 recipient of the Donald J. Johnston Lifetime Achievement Award, FP Canada said in a release on Thursday.

The award recognizes a lifetime of professional contributions and positive impact on FP Canada’s certifications and on financial planning.

“The award is a recognition of the leadership role Larry has played in raising the standards of financial planning and for his significant contributions in helping organizations and financial planners deliver more value to Canadians,” said Brett Millard, chair of FP Canada’s board of directors, in the release.

Wood is a tenured professor at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business where he teaches corporate governance, ethical decision making and personal finance management, and helped establish an FP Canada–approved education program.

As well, Wood has helped some of Canada’s largest financial services firms shift from a product focus to financial planning, the release said.

Wood has been an FP Canada Fellow since 2011 and has participated in the ongoing development of global standards for certified financial planners. He currently serves on FP Canada’s disciplinary hearing panel.

The award is named after the late Donald J. Johnston, who led FP Canada’s predecessor organization in its first decade.

FP Canada will make a charitable donation of $10,000 in Wood’s name to the Youth Singers of Calgary, the release said.
