How much do single clients need in retirement?

Experts agree that single clients need to save more for retirement, compared to couples. That’s because the cost for housing and utilities is the same – it’s not half as expensive to own a one-bedroom condo, for instance.

In fact, MoneySense reports that singles spend about 70% as much as couples in order to live the same lifestyle. A middle-class retirement would cost between $30,000 and $50,000 each year for a single person, assuming she owned her home and had no debt. This compares to a couple, who would need about $42,000 to $72,000.
