That’s because the cost for housing and utilities is the same – it’s not half as expensive to own a one-bedroom condo, for instance. In fact, MoneySense reports that singles spend about 70% as much as couples in order to live the same lifestyle. A middle-class retirement would cost between $30,000 and $50,000 each year for a single person, assuming she owned her home and had no debt.
