Each week, Advisor’s Edge summarizes notable management and advisor shifts across the financial and wealth management industry.

  • Within the past week, two advisors have moved from big banks to teams at Wellington-Altus Private Wealth. Justin Charbonneau, who previously worked as a portfolio manager with RBC Dominion Securities for eight years, has transitioned his book (valued at approximately $100 million) to Calgary-based West Oak Family Office. With Charbonneau’s addition, the group said in an emailed statement to Advisor’s Edge (AE) that its AUM has risen to “just over $1 billion.” The group of 10 manages 70 households with an average of $13 million in assets each, and Charbonneau will help bolster their holistic planning and portfolio management expertise. It was later announced that Ludmila Paciora joined the Waterfront Group, a separate Wellington-Altus team located in Burlington, Ont. She comes from CIBC, where she was most recently a senior financial advisor for the past six years.
  • On Feb. 17, industry veteran Ian Russell was named a senior fellow of the C.D. Howe Institute. Russell was president and CEO of the Investment Industry Association of Canada (IIAC) from April 2006 to July 2021. He’s currently a partner at Toronto-based Russell Deacon & Company and a member of several industry boards, and looks forward to “influencing the thinking of Canadian governments, foreign leaders and multinational institutions.”
  • Ilana Keyes has transitioned into the role of executive director of marketing and communications for CIBC Private Wealth and CIBC Asset Management. She was previously senior director of financial and investment advice, and has worked at the bank for nearly nine years.
  • The Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) has named Sandra Lau and James Barber as co-CIOs effective March 1, succeeding Dale MacMaster who announced his retirement last October. Lau, who’s been with the company for more than 20 years, will also be head of public investments. Barber, who joined the company in July but who has decades of experience, will oversee private investments.
  • As announced in December, Ashley Lawrence has officially taken on the role of senior vice president and head of alternatives at AGF Management Ltd. He has approximately 20 years of private alternatives experience in global markets, including 16 with Brookfield Asset Management. Effective Feb. 14, he began reporting to Kevin McCreadie, CEO and CIO at AGF.
