Veteran industry executive Tal Cohen is taking over as head of U.S. exchange giant Nasdaq Inc.’s North American trading businesses.

Nasdaq announced on Tuesday that it has named Cohen executive vice president, North American market services, giving him responsibility for its trading businesses in Canada and the U.S. He takes on the new role July 1.

Cohen joined Nasdaq when it acquired Chi-X Canada in 2016. He was previously CEO of alternative trading system Chi-X Global Holdings.

Before that, he worked at electronic trading pioneer Instinet and had stints at American Express and Arthur Andersen.

“Tal’s strength in strategic thinking and proven execution skills will be tremendous assets in his new role, particularly as our clients’ needs continue to evolve,” Adena Friedman, president and CEO of Nasdaq, said in a statement.

“His pursuit of market structure reform is based on his longtime constructive dialogue with all industry participants, and he will be a great leader for our North American trading franchise,” she added.
