Pascal elected as CALU chair

Barry Pascal has been elected board chair for the Conference for Advanced Life Underwriting (CALU) for the 2021–2022 term, the Ottawa-based advocacy group announced Wednesday in a release.

A 38-year veteran of the advanced insurance and financial advisory industry, Pascal has served on the CALU board for a total of six years. He has also served on more than nine CALU committees — three as chair.

During Pascal’s term, the release said, the CALU board will prioritize supporting federal government initiatives to support the small business sector as a key driver of economic growth, to strengthen Canada’s approach to long-term care, and to ensure the country’s retirement savings regime remains “one of the best in the world.”

“Advocating for sound public policy that protects the financial health of Canadians and promotes economic growth … is particularly critical today when we are at a crossroads with the pandemic and when our government will be making policy decisions on the economic impacts that will affect Canadians for years to come,” Pascal said in the release.

Pascal is a frequent speaker on life insurance, estate tax planning and the funding of shareholders’ agreements. He contributed to forming the Jewish Chamber of Commerce of Montreal and has also acted as co-chair of McGill University’s Goodman Cancer Research Centre Gala, chairman of the Annual Campaign of Federation CJA and as president of the Jewish Community Foundation.
