If clients want to put some green toward green causes, let them know they can also donate land and real estate — and save tax at the same time.
“Canada has excellent tax incentives for eco-gifts that need to be better publicized and understood,” Malcolm Burrows, head of Philanthropic Advisory Services at Scotia Wealth Management, told Tides Canada in a release publicizing an updated guide to environmental donations.
This Green Legacies Guide, created by Give Green Canada and the Land Trust Alliance of B.C., includes information on annual gifts, bequests, gifts of life insurance and real estate, endowments, ecological gifts, and more. While the guide is meant for British Columbian donors, many of its principles apply across Canada (except Quebec).
