With a decade of financial reporting and newsroom management experience, Melissa Shin heads Advisor Group’s suite of industry-leading publications. Her work has been cited in university syllabi, in textbooks and to national regulators. In 2012, she was the youngest-ever recipient of Women in Communications and Technology’s Emerging Leader award. Before joining the Advisor team in 2011, Melissa was managing editor of Corporate Knights, an independent magazine focused on clean capitalism. While there, she launched multiple sustainability rankings and was asked to advise national organizations on ESG strategy. In 2010, she was awarded a Great Waters Fellowship by the Institutes for Journalism and Natural Resources. A graduate of the Schulich School of Business at York University, Melissa also chairs Point of View magazine, the country’s premiere magazine about documentary culture.
Suzanne Sharma (on leave)
Suzanne Sharma is an award-winning journalist who has covered finance, insurance and real estate nationally for the last decade. During her time at Advisor Group, she has been shortlisted for CFA Society Toronto’s Journalist of the Year award and won silver for Best Professional Article at the 2016 Canadian Business Media Awards. Before joining the team, Suzanne was associate editor at Advisor Group’s sister publications, Canadian Insurance Top Broker and Corporate Risk Canada.
Simon Doyle has worked as a journalist since 2002, having spent the bulk of his career covering business, politics, the economy and regulatory affairs in Ottawa. He’s taught business journalism and intro to reporting at Carleton University and worked as a stringer for Financial Times, Globe and Mail and Reuters. From 2009 to 2015, Simon worked on Hill Times Publishing’s online subscriber news services. He launched and led The Wire Report, a business news service covering media and telecom, and oversaw the company’s rebrand of The Lobby Monitor, a subscriber news service about Canada’s lobbying industry.
With more than two decades of design experience, Gil Martinez has worked for publishers throughout North America. He has been a member of the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario since 2004, where duties include portfolio reviews for junior designers. In the past, he sat on the group’s ethics and education committees. Gil has received several awards for his work, including an honourable mention at the How International Design Awards, a So Good Design Award, and a Gold Medal from the Canadian Business Media Awards. He is also a published author on design topics.
Katie Keir’s rising star was lauded by the industry when she was named Best New Journalist by the Canadian Business Media Awards in 2012. Since then, she’s continued to report insightful pieces on regulatory, economic and investment topics. Prior to joining Advisor Group, she was part of the web editorial team at Canadian Grocer magazine. She holds a Honours Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Toronto, and attended the Publishing Certificate Program at Ryerson University.
Previously a freelance editor and writer, Michelle Schriver is the latest member to join the Advisor team. While completing Ryerson’s Certificate in Publishing, she won two awards for academic excellence and innovation. Michelle is an active member of Editors Canada, for which she’s served as sponsorship chair and branch seminars chair. Despite having success as a do-it-yourself investor — in her university days, she admits she invested her tuition money in stocks between semesters — she’s now gained the wisdom to listen to the experts.
