Melissa Shin

With a decade of financial reporting and newsroom management experience, Melissa Shin heads Advisor Group’s suite of industry-leading publications. Her work has been cited in university syllabi, in textbooks and to national regulators. In 2017, she won awards from both CFA Society Toronto and the Portfolio Management Association of Canada for her reporting. Past honours have included an award from Women in Communications and Technology and a fellowship from the Institutes for Journalism and Natural Resources. Before joining the Advisor team in 2011, Melissa was managing editor of Corporate Knights, an independent magazine focused on clean capitalism. While there, she launched multiple sustainability rankings and was asked to advise national organizations on ESG strategy. A graduate of the Schulich School of Business at York University, Melissa was chair of Point of View, the country’s premiere magazine about documentary culture, from 2013 to 2017.

Mark Burgess

Mark Burgess has been covering the intersection of business and politics since 2011, and has been a journalist for the past decade. He reported on regulatory policy and legislation from the Parliamentary Press Gallery, first covering the broadcast and telecom industries for The Wire Report, and then as editor of The Lobby Monitor and deputy editor of The Hill Times. He’s also won several Ontario and Quebec community newspaper awards, including Best Business and Finance Story (2014, Ontario). More recently he covered the marketing world as Strategy magazine’s associate editor. Mark is also a published travel writer and has dabbled as a correspondent from fictitious war zones for the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre.

Gil Martinez

With more than two decades of design experience, Gil Martinez has worked for publishers throughout North America. He has been a member of the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario since 2004, where duties include portfolio reviews for junior designers. In the past, he sat on the group’s ethics and education committees. Gil has received several awards for his work, including an honourable mention at the How International Design Awards, a So Good Design Award, and a Gold Medal from the Canadian Business Media Awards. He is also a published author on design topics.

Katie Keir’s rising star was lauded by the industry when she was named Best New Journalist by the Canadian Business Media Awards in 2012. Since then, she’s continued to report insightful pieces on regulatory, economic and investment topics. Prior to joining Advisor Group, she was part of the web editorial team at Canadian Grocer magazine. She holds a Honours Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Toronto, and attended the Publishing Certificate Program at Ryerson University.

Michelle Schriver

Previously a freelance editor and writer, Michelle Schriver brings her passion for editing and writing about complex topics to the team. While completing Ryerson’s Certificate in Publishing, she won two awards for academic excellence and innovation. Michelle is an active member of Editors Canada, for which she’s served as sponsorship chair and branch seminars chair. Despite having success as a do-it-yourself investor — in her university days, she admits she invested her tuition money in stocks between semesters — she’s now gained the wisdom to listen to the experts.

Sharon Ho

A journalist for almost 10 years, Sharon has worked at Canadian and international media organizations. She spent five years at Reuters as an online news editor, writing about personal finance and small businesses for Reuters.com. Her news story about an increasing number of seniors declaring bankruptcy in the U.S. was read by more than 40,000 people in one month. Following her time at Reuters, Sharon worked for CBC.ca in Newfoundland. Outside the newsroom, Sharon volunteers as a board member for the Ralph Thornton Community Centre in Toronto. She has a Bachelor of Journalism degree from Ryerson University.
