Here are the 2017 winners of the PlanPlus Canada National Financial Planning Awards:

  • Paul Tyers, managing director and portfolio manager at Wealth Stewards, first place recipient;
  • Jason Pereira, partner and senior financial consultant at Woodgate Financial, first runner-up; and
  • Mark LeClaire, director of estate and financial planning at Sun Life Financial, second runner-up.

“Winners are determined by five internationally qualified judges, who are voting blind — not knowing whose work they were adjudicating,” says John Page, awards chair, in a release.

To compete, planners submit plans they have delivered to real clients, with clients’ permission. The expert judges adjudicate the plans based on the quality and breadth of the recommendations they contain, and how well they address the clients’ best interests.

The competition is open to all Canadian financial advisors who are members in good standing of a financial planning association or other professional body, and who hold a recognized professional designation.

Winners automatically advance to the finals of the PlanPlus Global Financial Planning Awards — Americas region, where they will face off against some of the best planners in the Americas.
