Twitter abuzz with pope opera

Move over Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian, Pope Benedict XVI has joined Twitter and he’s racking up 150,000 follows a day.

Using the handle @Pontifex, he is yet to post his first tweet and has only been following seven of his own linguistic avatars.

The twitterverse has exploded with reactions, some just taking the mick, like this FT report, others letting their imagination run amuck.

One tweeter says, “I want publishing rights to DMs the Pope gets. Twitter’s mega confession box, full of stories of drugs, sex and violence.”

Some others are getting a bit more creative with spoof accounts, one of which ‘dedicated’ to “Delivering the word of God faster than anyone else.”
