While the congratulations began pouring in, her colleagues were concerned she was about to jump ship. She had to go online to assure everyone that her “new” job was one that she’d held for over five years.

To avoid this mistake, Fusco suggests changing your LinkedIn activity broadcast settings. Before tweaking your profile, turn the option off. Fusco notes that this can be detrimental in the long run, as your visibility on the site decreases without activity broadcasts. But it beats the alternative, for now.

LinkedIn notes that you should turn broadcasting off if you’re looking for a new job and don’t want your present employer to know you’re tidying your profile. Fusco hopes LinkedIn will offer a distinction between a profile update and a new position soon.
